Chapter Nine
October 24
Sunrise was only minutes away when the shaggy shadow stepped out of the mist at the edge of the forest. Cyrus stopped on top of a fallen tree and sat comfortably on his haunches, his pink tongue lolling slowly in and out as he scanned the parking lot and buildings as if they were the artifacts of some alien civilization. As he sat there, wondering why humans chose to stay in such odd concrete caves, he was torn between remaining in his new worldthe world of the wildand returning to the world he had come fromthe incredibly sterile world of man.
Why go back? a part of Cyrus insisted. They stink. They're stupid. They can't run, or smell. And they're so incredibly blind to everything!
As far as Cyrus could tell, the only drawback to being a wolf was not having anyone to share his adventures with.
But naturally he had to go back. He owed it to Kyna. Kyna of the pale skin, the auburn hair and the laughing green eyes. She didn't stink. He could smell her sleeping body all the way across the parking lot, all musty and ripe with night sweat. She could be a bitch at times, but she could be amazingly tender and sweet too. Besides, someone really was after her and he couldn't just leave her high and dry.
He sigheda strangely human sound coming from a wolfthen turned and cast one final wistful glance at the unsullied green. Then he relaxed and willed his body to reform.
A few minutes later, Cyrusnaked and shiveringtiptoed
